Strategic management as well as strategic planning - which constitutes its part - are gaining in importance. At present most companies link strategic planning to better functioning and greater effectiveness of undertaken activities. In the paper an attempt was made, and for this aim the national and foreign literature was studied, at a presentation of the importance and scope of strategic planning in a contemporary enterprise. In the first part of the paper the author clarified the notion of management strategy and presented definitions that are most often quoted in the literature of the subject. The next section was devoted to the discussion of the essence of strategic planning. Successive stages of the shaping of the strategy were presented beginning with an adoption of the goal and concluding with making a strategic choince. In the third part attention was concentrated on the issue of creating strategic options on the level of particular activity and a company. (original abstract)
