The paper introduces the series of articles under the common title: "Stable Distributions in Statistical Studies". The notion of a stable distribution has been established whereas the class of stable distributions has been located as the subclass of infinitely divisible distributions. The basic characterizations of stable distributions have been discussed and the characteristic function of such distributions has been represented. (original abstract)
