Transport Implementation of River Odra and the Development of Riverside Cities

Abstrakty
W artykule zwrócono uwagę na problemy rozwoju żeglugi rzecznej w aspekcie rozwoju miast nadbrzeżnych (zagospodarowanie przestrzenne, uniezależnienie się od kolei itp.). Rozważania dokumentowane są przykładami zagospodarowania rzeki Odry.
The actual condition of navigable river Odra (Oder) and plans for the nearest future have been widely outlined. The integral part of those plans is the project concerning the construction of Kanał Śląski (Silesia Canal) via Rybnicki Okręg węglowy (Rybnik Coal Region), joining upper part of Wisła (Vistula) with Odra. That would give the possibility of regural and direct shipping from, for example, (Krakow - Nowa Huta) to sea ports Szczecin - Świnoujście what gives shorter way than using the Wisła route to Gdańsk (Gdansk). Some of European transport development tendencies have been showed: the increase of road transport, the increase or stability ofwater - borne transport, and district regress of rail - road transport. According to the ecological point of view, the western Europe opts for extention of inland waterways and the shipping trade. We should be aware that those trends will include Poland, and the water-borne transport will be appreciated. To get ahead of this fact, the consequences refering to, among others, development of urban transport and city planning, should be taken into consideration. Two examples were discussed wider:Wrocław and Kraków.(original abstract)
