The Polish State Railways constituted the biggest transport institution in inter-war Poland. As a result of the extent of damage, the first postwar years were characterized by a fast rate of reconstruction of railway lines and rolling stock. In the course of the whole inter-war period, investment in railways was high. Starting from 1924, the Polish State Railways became a profit-yielding institution, self-sufficient, covering its expenditure from income. Following the attacks of the advocates of economic liberalism in 1926, the railways were commercialized while still remaining to be state owned. That move was of great strategic and economic significance. Investment made at that time resulted in longer railway lines, better travel conditions, shorter travelling time and modern technical base. In the late 1930s the state of railway services and the comfort of travel were up to the world standard. Owing to a wider railway network, branches of industry connected with this kind of transport developed such as factories producing railway cars, railway engines, railroad ties and the like. Railway orders for both the state-owned and private enterprises were an important form of activating the Polish economy in line with the economic policy pursued by the government.(original abstract)
