Przedstawiono sytuację górnictwa węgla kamiennego w krajach Unii Europejskiej, warunki funkcjonowania górnictwa w Polsce, przesłanki i kierunki jego restrukturyzacji, etapy, spodziewane efekty oraz perspektywy.

The coal-mining sector tends to find itself in the limelight more often than any other sector mostly on account of the problems affecting the sector's restructuring the country's industrial policy and power supply self-sufficiency. The paper aims at a presentation of the status of reforms in the sector and its prospects in the next few years. While presenting the situation of that sector of the Polish economy, the author tries to find a place for it in the ever shrinking Europe's coal market. In his paper the author upholds the need for restructuring coal mines resulting both from the low profitability and considerable indebtedness and from obsolete technology as well as from the organization and ownership structure which does not conform to the reguirements of a market economy.(original abstract)
