Artykuł przedstawia istotę funduszu inwestycyjnego, podstawowe rodzaje konstrukcji funduszy funkcjonujących na rozwiniętych rynkach kapitałowych oraz ich klasyfikację. Szczególny nacisk położono na amerykański rynek funduszy inwestycyjnych.

In the article the authors made an attempt at systemizing investment funds operating in the capital markets. These funds may be classified adopting various criteria. The most frequently encountered in the literature is the division of investment funds into open and closed. They have different objectives, investment styles and different ways of income payment. Other divisions are based on such criteria as: income payment methods, risk taking and return rate, geographic are of operation, branch specialization and types of securities invested in. That last criterion is responsible for the division of funds into money market funds, bond funds and share funds. Another group is constituted by funds specializing in investing in other markets such as; property funds, precious metals funds. Any attempt at funds classification is to some degree a simplification as the division of funds is based on the static analysis of portfolio composition for a given day. When the managing firm changes the investment goal the fund is automatically ascribed to another category of funds. Still the systematization of funds helps to better illustrate their role, goals and purposefulness of investing ready cash in them. (original abstract)
