Catolicism versus Capitalism : Discussions over Normative Bases of the Capitalist Economy

Abstrakty
Przedmiotem artykułu jest stosunek katolicyzmu do filozoficznych założeń kapitalizmu. Szczególnie omówiono takie zagadnienia, jak: katolickie ujęcie prawa własności, etyczny wymiar bogactwa i zysku, konkurencja a "zasada solidarności" oraz społeczny kontekst wolności gospodarczej.
The article concentrates around the problem which can be most generally defined as the attitude of Catholicism to the liberal programme determining the normative bases of capitalist market economy. According to the author the Cattholic Church could accept this programme provided that at least two conditions are fulfilled. Firstly, it should be proved that there are no fundamental differences between the values of the capitalist economic system and those accepted by the Catholic social doctrine, the so-called social principles understood as certain norms of social life. Secondly, it would be necessary to present the arguments to prove that it is possible - without any disturbance in the market system - to introduce non-liberal, coming from a different source and therefore "strange", moral and religious systems of values as additional regulators of individual activities. The article refers to the first of the above-mentioned problems. The author points out that there are no fundamental contradictions between the basic normative assumptions of capitalism and the Catholic social thought. The Catholic social doctrine shows a positive attitude towards the values of private property, wealth, profit, competition and economic freedom. (original abstract)
