The determination of wage rates depends upon the structure of the particular labor market. In a competitive market the wage rate and level of employment will be determined by intersection of labor supply and demand. A unions may raise competitive wage rates by: increasing the derived demand of labor, restricting the supply of labor and directly enforcing an above-equilibrium wage rate. In many industries, the labor market takes the form of bilateral monopoly. Although available empirical evidence on the effect of unionism is not big and mixed, this article is attempt to provide the answer to questions such as: Are the economic effects of labor unions positive or negative? Do unions raise wages? Do they increase or diminish economic efficiency?(original abstract)
