The article presents conclusions form the studies on the geography and scale of homelessness in Poland. The author has been studying this subject since 1993. Initially he tried to find an adequate definition of homelessness. In his opinion homelessness refers to people who at a given time do not have and are not able to find by themselves any shelter which they could regard as their own and wich would fulfil some minimum conditions of the dewelling place. The article presents several general mechanisms of distribution of the homeless in Poland which cause their concentration in big cities. However, the big cities do not generate this phenomenon; they are only a convenient place for the homeless out of whom approximately 50 procent come from villages or small towns. The author shows that the wide-spread belieef that there are about 300 thousand of the homeless in Poland is not true. On the basis of his own studies he estimated the number of the homeless in Poland to be about 30-50 thousand people, men, women and children. (original abstract)
