Od samego początku telegraf był używany do przekazywania informacji gospodarczych, a także w kolejnictwie i żegludze. Przedmiotem artykułu jest zarys historyczny rozwoju telegrafu w XIX stuleciu. Autor omówił technikę telekomunikacji i rozwój sieci telegraficznej prywatnej i państwowej, porozumienia międzynarodowe, ruch telegraficzny, ekonomiczne aspekty eksploatacji oraz znaczenie telegrafu dla gospodarki.
The telegraph was invented in the thirties and the forties the first telegraph lines were built in United States and Europe. In the sixties and the seventies Europa, America, Asia and Australia were connected by telegraph. In most countries telegraph was State monopoly and since 1866 even in Great Britain. In the United States "Western Union" had monopolistic status. Internationals lines those on land and the sea were owned by private stock companies. In 1865 the International Telegraph Union was established to supply the needs of international telecommunication. From very beginning the telegraph was used mainly to communicat economical information and also in railway and shipping. (original abstract)
