The since 1-st march 1994 has been an international agreement binding for Poland with reference to meeting the standards of protection and development of the rights of local self-government units, guaranteeing the right of local communities to solve their own problems and setting the principles governing powers, controls and finance, which all local government systems should respect. The paper presents the Charter provisions on local autonomy, Charter ratification process in Poland and its place in Polish legislation. It also presents the Charter signatories and its origin as well as numerous translation mistakes that occur in the authorised Polish version of the Charter.(original abstract)
