Omówiono problemy związane z funkcjonowaniem spółdzielczości w okresie transformacji. Przedstawiono analizę SWOT i ocenę szans rozwojowych spółdzielczości wiejskiej.

Market economy with its equal rights of all partners acting on the market is influenced on the position of economic units in national and regional economies, in traditional co-operatives and in new established ones as well. Recently issues of the role of co-operatives have become more central to policy making in the Central and East European Countries (CEECs). The main reason seems to be a future accesion into European Union as co-operatives play very important role in its economy. These problems are reflected in the process of transformation during the pre-entry period. In Poland, like in other CEECs, agriculture is the relatively important part of national economy. Recently there are changes in co-operative sector and its role in the economic development. The SWOT analysis shows current market position of rural co-operatives. As far they have adjustment their activity to market economy by limitation of the range and assets, what is harmful for their economy. The current stage of transition process gives a good reason to changes which should lead Polish co-operatives to the role that is played by co-operative-type organisations in the countries of market economy.
