Renovation is a multi-aspect process of the restructuring of the urban tissue. The aim of renovation is to maintain, improve, transform and ensure further development of the spatial structure of the city. Both causes and effects of renovation include economic and social elements. The process of renovation of the cities in Germany is controlled by the local authorities and the government and its origins can be traced to the beginning of the seventies. The positive effects of the process of renovation of cities include: revival of the city centres, improvement of housing facilities, elimination of shortages in technological and social infrastructure, increased value of land subject to improvement and growing attractiveness of the neighbouring areas. The negative effects comprise frequently social results, i.e. displacement of the well-established dwellers and users of the space. A specific type of urban renovation today is a more and more frequent restoration of large area housing estates built in the post-war period both in Poland and in Germany. Urban renovation in Germany is a well-developed process which takes into account both social and economic aspects. Apart from the renovation of multi-family housing areas its aim is also decentralisation of service and trade network, abandoning a traditional shape of the city and acceptance of the principles of social and ecological planning.
