Wzdłuż linii kolejowych, obok podstawowej budowli jaką był dworzec-stacja, wznoszone były, ciekawe ze względu na bogatą formę wystroju, budynki magazynowe, lokomotywownie, wieże wodne i ciśnień, budynki socjalne, mieszkalne i noclegownie, posterunki straży kolejowej, itd. Na trasach przebiegu linii kolejowych występowały ponad to mosty, tunele i wiadukty. Ochroną objęte zostały wszystkie budynki łącznie z zachowanym taborem i urządzeniami technicznymi, takimi jak: semafory, pompy, zwrotnice, itd.
