Przedmiotem artykułu jest zagadnienie okręgów przemysłowych. Autor charakteryzuje cechy okręgu przemysłowego. Zwraca uwagę na dwa elementy obecne w okręgu przemysłowym: kooperacja i konkurencja.
The appearance of industrial districts is an example of changes that occur in the field of production organisation where traditional mass production is being replaced with production based on elasticity and specialisation. The economic success of industrial districts in many countries stems from their particularly effective economic and social organization based on small firms. Strong chains of small firms that work basing on specialisation and subcontract are the source of that effectiveness. Such organisation of production creates exceptionally beneficial competitive environment for small firms working within it. This allows them to overcome barriers resulting from limited size and achieve the economy of scale and range. The pattem of competition and co-operation is changing in industrial district. Firms that strongly compete also help each other because they want the experience and skills of all the firms in a district to stay as a part of common resources that increase the competitiveness of a district as a whole.
