Określenie "maszyna Turinga" jest tworem wyłącznie teoretycznym, sformułowanym przez Alana M. Turinga, projektem maszyny matematycznej, mającej pomóc jego autorowi w rozwiązania ważnego prblemu matematycznego. Termin ten jest poza matematyką szeroko wykorzystywany także w psychologii poznawczej. Zamierzeniem autora była analiza teoretycznej treści maszyny Turinga (pewnych jej ograniczeń) oraz ocena użyteczności tego pojęcia w psychologicznych i filozoficznych koncepcjach ludzkiego umysłu. Autor założył następującą tezę: maszyna Turinga nie może być właściwym modelem umysłu i działania ludzkiego; niemniej może być użyteczna, w ograniczonym zakresie, przy analizie niektórych czynności poznawczych człowieka.
The term 'Turning machine' applies to the theoretical model of a computer formulated by Alan M. Turning. It is widely used and discussed also outside the sphere of mathematics, in cognitive psychology, artificial intelligence theories and it serves as a basis for the so-called computational conception of the mind. The purpose of the article is to analyse the theoretical contents of the Turning computer (certain of its limitations) and to estimate the usefulness of this concept in the psychological and philosophical conceptions of the human mind. The thesis is a follows: the Turning computer cannot be an adequate (correct) model of the human mind and action: nevertheless it can be useful (to a limited extent) for the analysis of certain cognitive activities of man. An open question is the problem what other models can be useful in describing particular kinds of human thinking and actions: can other kinds of machines (cybernetic homeostat, neural networks, a general-purpose quantum computer, or other types of analogue machines) simulate the whole (or perhaps some aspect) of human actions?
