Art and the "Wisdom of Laughter" : Does the Artist Have Moral Duties?

Treść artykułu stanowią rozważania na temat moralnych zobowiązań artystów wobec społeczeństwa, przejawiających się w odpowiedzialności za kształt i wartość utworów. Autor odwołuje się do zjawisk obecnych w literaturze polskiej tzw. drugiego obiegu (lata siedemdziesiąte i osiemdzisiąte), twórczości i poglądów rosjanina Michała Bachtina, epoki awangardy i formacji noeawangrdowej.
The article discusses the ever-topical problem of the artist's responsibility. The author rejects the simplified conviction, still occasionally present in the circle of neo-conservative thought that, the artist fulfils his cultural mission to the highest extent when he expresses in his creative work the national ethos confirmed by the authority of tradition. Neither burdening the artist with a duty of serving 'the national truth' (is there, after all, one 'national truth' in the present-day democratic society?) nor, conversely, ansolving him from any moral responsibility is a solution worthy of the contemporary era. The author expects the artist to have a more ambitious attitude: the ability to carry on a permanent dialogue both with the legacy of his own culture and with the traditions of other national cultures. Such an attitude presupposes wise tolerance towards Another (the Different) and a critical detachment from stereotypes that pervade the national consciousness. This will be conductive, the author believes, to eliminating the remains of ideological thinking. For it is not true that with the decline of 'meta-narration of progress' in its Marxist brand, other ideologies have also disappeared. The human race is still threatened by the demons of nationalism, religious fundamentalism or racism. A stryggly against them can also make use of Bakhtin's 'wisdom of laughter' aroused by art, which derides all doctrinarianism and does not accept any simplified solutions to man's everlasting dilemmas of worldview and axiology.
