The paper first describes the characteristics of the British pension system affecting women's access to pension provision, including the effect of reforms introduced in the 1980s and 1990s by the Conservative government. The paper then discusses the implications of existing regulations for women in terms of the cost of family care and loss of earnings and pension income. In conclusion, the paper points to the growing disadvantages faced by women in the pension system in which the private sector of pensions predominates. (short original abstract)
