W artykule podjęto próbę podsumowania aktywności Społecznego Komitetu Odnowy Zabytków Krakowa (SKOZK), jednej z najważniejszych instytucji zaangażowanych w renowację budynków historycznych i pomników w Krakowie. Autor opisuje podstawy działania SKOZK - kryteria selekcji budynków i pomników historycznych, których renowacja ma być finansowana ze środków Narodowego Funduszu Rewaloryzacji Zabytków Krakowa w latach 1991-1997.

This study attempts to summarise the activities of the Public Committee for the Restoration of Historic Buildings and Monuments in Kraków (Społeczny Komitet Odnowy Zabytków Krakowa - SKOZK), one of the most important institutions engaged in the renovation of historic buildings and monuments in the city. Beginning with an explanation of the basic goals behind the protection of historic buildings and monuments and the scope of renovation, conservation, restoration and reconstruction, the author discusses modern concepts for protecting historic urban complexes, which ascribe particular importance to selecting proper functions for historic buildings and monuments, changing those functions, or leaving them as they are. The author describes the principles of SKOZK, in particular the procedures and criteria for selecting buildings and monuments of historical interest, whose revalorisation will be financed from the resources of the National Fund for the Revalorisation of Historic Buildings and Monuments in Kraków (Narodowy Fundusz Rewaloryzacji zabytków Krakowa - NFRZK). The author also considers the principles governing the distribution of NFRZK resources - due to these principles, close to 100 procent of subsidies for renovation work cannot be reclaimed. However, analysis of the structure of historic buildings and monuments shows that these are fair procedures which make it possible to finance conservation and renovation work in buildings useful to the community and thus non-revenue generating, e.g., serving the goals of culture, art and science.
