Abstrakty
W artykule przedstawiono uwarunkowania historyczne i społeczne powstania współczesnego systemu uniwersyteckiego w USA oraz omówiono zasady jego funkcjonowania.
The system of higher education in the United States has been formed in such a way as to meet the various educational needs of the American society to the greatest extent. However, dubts still arise whether the presently accepted principles conditioning the scope and methodof acquiring knowledge really fulfil the expectations of modern Americans. After a more precise analysis it appears that providing the opportunities to acquire practical skills necessary to carry out specific jobs is not sufficient to create an educated society, but the necessity of introducing of the basics humanistic and general education ought to be reckoned with.
