W artykule omówiono dynamikę i strukturę ruchu granicznego w Polsce południowo-wschodniej w latach 1994-1997. Z przeprowadzonej analizy wynika, że ruch ten ma w dużym stopniu podłoże ekonomiczne związane z dokonywaniem zakupów przez Polaków w strefie przygranicznej.

Social and political transformations in Poland and neighbouring countries have contributed to the fact that frontier traffic has increased many times. On the territory of south-eastern Poland there are two road crossings of important meaning for transfrontier traffic - Barwinek and Medyka, and also a railway crossing in Przemyśl. The crossing at Medyka concentrates ca. 1/3 of all clearances on the frontier between Poland and Ukraine, and Barwinek is chosen by every fifth person crossing the frontier between Poland and Slovakia; whereas in Przemyśl is the largest railway crossing on the frontier with Ukraine. The paper includes an analysis of frontier traffic dynamics and its structure, including that according to the country of origin, its intensification throughout the year; it also discusses the structure of foreigners coming to Poland and of Poles going abroad according to the purpose of such visits, distance of residence and distance of shopping place from the frontier; it presents the size and structure of expenses by foreigners in Poland and Poles abroad.
