In the past few decades brand new trends have emerged in the theory arid practice of management. Ideas as Change Management or Project Management, in broader economical context (globalization, computerization), require new standards to be set for the Human Resources Management related processes. New factors have to be considered now, to name a few: short competency acquisition time, constant need for development of knowledge, multiple fields of activity, and career paths. It seems that traditional approaches to the person-job relation, based on so called "fit" theories, are no longer enough. They are insufficient even to describe modern types of career, like when a young IT specialist, in 7 years' time becomes a Managing Partner responsible for Development Strategy in a global organization. However, bare criticism of tradition is not the point here. This article aims to outline one of the aspects of more general approach to the vocational activity. The work styles, including factors like problem solving strategies, way of performing duties, teamwork roles, or preferences related to work environment or tasks, are surprisingly rare the object of research by I/O Psychology. Apart from the detailed research on the work styles components (such as temperamental traits, or cognitive skills), one can find virtually nothing on the subject in the I/O Psychology knowledge body. Therefore, this paper's goal is to define those styles in relation to well known concepts of management: organizational culture, person-organization fit, or teambuilding. The authors conducted small-scale, introductory research. The results rendered to be very promising, since the employees tested turned out to be highly diversified in terms of preferred work styles components. The data suggests that the notion of work style is of significant relevance to work situations and is easily understood by people. (original abstract)
