Abstrakty

Tematem artykułu są flagi i herby współczesnych państw Afryki Północnej. Zaprezentowano wygląd flag i herbów 14 państw omawianego regionu, (oraz flagę Sahary Zachodniej), a także przedstawiono interpretację ich symboliki.

The article discusses the appearance and symbolism of 15 North African countries, including Western Sahara, a territory whose political status is not settled at present. Particular attention is directed to colors and design elements of interest in terms of geography. The state symbols of the majority of the region's nations feature elements (green color, star and crescent) referring to the dominant religion, Islam. Some states (Egypt, Sudan) have Pan-Arab colors on their flags. Such elements as the yellow of the crescent on the flag and emblem of Mauritania (symbol of the Sahara sands) refer to the geography of the place. The world of wild animals is represented in the emblem of Morocco by lions, of Chad by the lion and ibex, of Somalia by leopards, and of Sudan by the secretary bird. The role of animal husbandry in the economies of many North African countries is signified by the placement of a dromedary in the emblem of Eritrea or the head of a zebu in the emblem of Niger.
