Artykuł zajmuje się jednym z fundamentalnych pytań w nauce o stosunkach międzynarodowych, mianowicie dotyczącym miejsca i roli uniwersalistycznych organizacji bezpieczeństwa w międzynarodowym światowym systemie. Sprzeczny z powszechną opinią, problem z tożsamością i rzeczywistą potęgą tych organizacji zilustrowano przez dwa najbardziej reprezentatywne przykłady jakimi są Liga Narodów i kontynuatorka jej misji Organizacja Narodów Zjednoczonych.

This article deals with one of the fundamental questions in the science of international relations, namely the place and role of universalistic international organisations in the world system. Contrary to popular opinion, the problem of identity and actual power of these organisations, exemplified by the two most representative ones - the League of Nations and the United Nations Organisation - evokes scores of questions and doubt. The analysis, the main subject of which are the activities of the LN and the UN in the field of peaceful resolution of international conflicts, seeks to determine the scope of autonomy and competencies of these organisations. After analysing their formal authority, and confronting this authority with the experience of initiatives undertaken and peace actions led by these organisations, the author concludes that contrary to expectations, the aforementioned organisations most often play the role of tools in the policies of the great powers, rather than of independent actors shaping the international milieu.
