Autor, na przykładzie krajów Unii Europejskiej, rozważa przyczyny i skutki wymiany handlowej o charakterze wewnątrzgałęziowym oraz poszukuje teoretycznego uzasadnienia dla intensyfikacji handlu w tej postaci. W pierwszej części artykułu przedstawia główne założenia handlu wewnątrzgałęziowego z podziałem na handel wertykalny i horyzontalny. W części drugiej omawia konsekwencje prowadzenia tej wymiany. Ostatnia część artykułu zwiera charakterystykę determinant specyficznych dla ugrupowania integracyjnego.

The aim of the article is to present the factors which influence intra-industry trade exchange from the viewpoint of an integration group as well as to discuss the consequences of this exchange. The first part presents the assumptions of intra-industry trade. They provide a basis to differentiate a new kind of trade out of the traditional theories of international trade. A more profound analysis made it possible to divide trade into vertical and horizontal. The analysis of the consequences of intra-industry trade presented in three groups: general economic, specific for the integration group and for producers and consumers indicates that it plays a very significant role. However, the author emphasises the costs which in a theoretical approach supplement the picture of the consequences of intra-industry trade. The final part presents the influence of factors specific for the integration group. According to the theory of international trade those factors are differentiated as: foreign direct investments, creation of a single market and EMU as well as liquidation of non-tariff barriers and border formalities.
