Abstrakty

W opracowaniu opisano przyczyny powstania i rozwoju w USA specyficznego waloru rynku, jakim są obligacje śmieciowe (junk bonds). Celem autora jest charakterystyka tych obligacji i ich mechanizmu działania, a także czynników determinujących rozwój tego segmentu papierów wartościowych. W zakończeniu artykułu zwrócono uwagę na możliwości powstania i rozwoju rynku obligacji śmieciowych w Polsce.

This article deals with the junk bond market and presents the factors that led to its creation. After a number of years of turbulent development, junk bonds became a significant segment of the capital market in the United States. Because it was possible to earn a good return, corruption began to have a greater role on the junk bond market to the extent that the scope of this corruption threatened the entire US financial system. Determined intervention from the American government, however, repaired the situation. The popularity and growth of the junk bond market resulted from the fact that (despite the significant risk associated with it) it was advantageous to all of its participants. It:
- provided banks with the opportunity to earn and profit from bond issues,
- enabled enterprises to obtain fast and cheap credit,
- enticed investors with potential and actual pro f its. Weak companies with poor reputations first emitted junk bonds. Next to employ junk bonds were high-tech firms and companies with varied activities needing funds, whether to launch a new product or to engage in the speculative purchase of another firm. In Poland, provided certain conditions are met, a junk bond market could emerge and over time become an important and useful segment of the Polish capital market. (original abstract)
