Przedstawiono główne założenia koncepcji bezpieczeństwa Polski po 1989 roku. Omówiono stanowiska Polski w szczegółowych kwestiach Europejskiej Polityki Bezpieczeństwa i Obrony (ESDP).

Presenting the main objectives of Poland's security policy after 1989, the author insists that from the Polish perspective NATO (with distinctive US presence) has become definitely the most important security institution in Europe. Other organizations, as the European Communities and the European Union, the Council of Europe and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), have been seen as playing a supplementary role in this field. However, NATO has proved to be less coherent than Poland expected. Troublesome tensions between US and EU became evident, as well as controversies regarding internal transformation of the Alliance. Poland's accession to NATO in 1999 coincided with the development of the European Security and Defence Identity policies (ESDI). The author explains in details Polish official reactions to ESDI, concerning especially the decision--making procedures, the formation of governing bodies within ESDI, the build--up of the European Rapid Reaction Force, and agreements between EU and NATO. He concludes that Poland was not particularly enthusiastic about ESDI, preferring the trans-Atlantic cooperation and strong US presence in Europe. Even though Poland adopted more positive approach on the eve of joining the EU, it still remains rather sceptical towards this policy. (original abstract)
