Zadaniem artykułu jest próba określenia znaczenia informacji w działalności eksportowej małych i średnich przedsiębiorstw. W opracowaniu zdefiniowano informację i ukazano jej wpływ na eksport. Praca jest przeglądem dorobku literatury światowej z odniesieniem do sytuacji polskiej.

This article constitutes a review of world literature on the place and significance of the system of obtaining information in the export activities of small and medium-sized enterprises. Obtaining information for SMEs is of critical importance to their success. First of all, most models of internationalisation emphasise that information is a resource, without which a company conducting sales across its borders is subjected to a greater probability of failure than it would have been exposed to on the domestic market. Secondly, the importance of information as the basis of knowledge is all the greater in the context of the emergence of the so-called knowledge-based economy. Thirdly, of key importance is not only obtaining information itself, but obtaining useful information of appropriate quality and reliable origin. Fourthly, obtaining knowledge does not complete the operational cycle of information systems. This is because the creative use of knowledge within the enterprise is also significant. Therefore, difficulties in obtaining and using information, or the inability to obtain it at all, may be acknowledged as export barriers with large impacts. Such negative impacts may apply in particular to small and medium-sized enterprises, which by their very nature have limited access to resources, including to information. In this article, the author addresses the issue in general terms, offering only minor references to Poland, as the article is intended as a preparation for empirical research on the national SME sector.
