The objective of this article is to present and make a comparative analysis of selected concepts and intellectual interpretations of the dynamically developing globalisation process. This process is being perceived and evaluated in very different ways. Positions and opinions on globalisation vary from enthusiastic support to total criticism and negation. Somewhere in the broadly understood centre one finds more moderate views, sometimes positive, sometimes sceptical, and most often realistic or simply pragmatic. The author of the article carries out a comparison of the way of thinking and opinions on the globalisation process presented by some eminent American authors (Francis Fukuyama, Samuel Huntington and Benjamin Barber) and by their European counterparts, devoting particular attention to the Spanish sociologist Manuel Castells, British philosoper John Gray, German sociologist and political thinker Ralf Dahrendorf and Polish humanists - Leszek Kolakowski and Zygmunt Bauman. The picture of globalisation emerging from the opinions of the "wise men" of the Western World reviewed in the article is not particularly optimistic. Most of the authors point to an urgent need for more or less drastic changes that ought to be introduced in the globalisation processes. They stress the necessity of changing both the action of the main players and the way of thinking about globalisation. Such necessity for change is also evident in the broader political and economic structures that define the present shape of this multidimensional process. In general most of the mentioned authors agree that the logic of the market alone will not do to solve many problems brought about by globalisation in the economic sphere. They also stress the fact that the nation-state still remains an indispensable institution able to face the challenges of globalisation in the political sphere. Most of them are also convinced that the safe future of our civilisation may only be ensured by the creative dialogue of different cultures, tolerance and openness to other identities that are being multiplied and condensed by the globalisation process in the sphere of culture.(original abstract)
