Autor zadaje sobie pytanie czy możemy mówić o zbiorowej tożsamości wspólnoty, jaką jest Unia Europejska i na jakich wartościach się ona opiera. Pojawia się też kwestia zachowania tożsamości, zwłaszcza wśród krajów kandydujących.

European integration creates a new type of international cooperation, being a form of cooperation between community institutions (a supranational factor) and member countries. It is not clear what form this cooperation will eventually take: federal union, federation of countries, or a functional model, encompassing both supranational and international elements. The debate on this subject is related to great challenges standing in front of the European Union: internal reforms which must guarantee its ability to function when new members are accepted, including post communist countries. Amongst the member countries there is consent that the next stage in their cooperation should be political integration. An mile stone on this path is creating and appealing to commonly accepted values, ideas and role models. This should lead to the building of a collective European Union identity. Such intentions have been expressed by member countries of the European Community in the Maastricht Treaty, where the signatories also agreed on the basics of the identity's axiology. That will also be based on the 50 years of experience in European integration. The Union's constitutionalism and consolidation of its internal democracy are to be important building blocks. In this context, the author analyses the achievements of the European Community, the European Union Treaty and it's extension: the Amsterdam and Nice Treaties (mainly the EU Human Rights Charter) and also other important elements of identity, such as the euro and the European Security and Defence Identity. He also poses a question whether we can already talk about a European Union identity and if Europeans identify themselves with united Europe? He also asks how will the joint European identity tie in with the historical identity of the continent including Christian values and traditions which are a very important part of it? The answer is not straightforward. The European Union in order to be a plane for ideological arguments must search for common grounds of internal democracy and identification. At the same time it must respect the delicate and sensitive barriers separating the identities of member-states and the identity created by community values. It will not be easy, but the process of forming a joint EU identity has already begun.(original abstract)
