The character of European integration, which deviates distinctly from other regional groupings, its multi-stage character and changing legal status, and its evolving territorial extent, render it difficult to select a theoretical concept of integration that may be acknowledged as the most complete and representative. As in the case of the changes inspired by the successive stages in the transformation of the Communities/European Union, so in theory, too, we are faced with a kind of evolution of attitudes and views on the essence and ultimate goal of European integration. At the same lime, theoretical concepts often clearly lag behind the actual state of affairs, which is complicated by continual change. This, among others, has led to a lack of grand theories, in place of which appears a series of partial theories that usually expose one of the decisive - according to their authors - aspects of European integration. This article reveals the distinctive pluralism in the search for an adequate theory and reviews the more important theoretical orientations and tendencies related to European integration. The latest enlargement of the European Union and the experience associated with it will certainly add new emphasis to the ongoing theoretical debate. (original abstract)
