Effects of Pesticide use Reduction on Farm Level in Rural Areas

The sustainable farm management requires the farm enterprises to reassess their farming strategies. The use of chemicals - pesticides and fertilizers - in crop production, and the level of use can have a significant impact on the income of production. The present research intends to find out whether the farm-level consequence of farming strategies which implement reduced chemical use can be measured and forecasted under Hungarian conditions. The former surveys and the simulation model developed for the analysis helped to state that successful farming can be pursued even with the restriction or prohibition of pesticide use, but the total ban on artificial chemicals - with unchanged sales possibilities - can be undertaken only with the use of organic manure. In fact, precision farming means the rationalization of chemical use, but it involves extra costs which are not recovered. (original abstract)
