Celem autorów było przedstawienie miejsca i roli wiejskiej spółdzielczości w krajach Unii Europejskiej i krajach kandydujących oraz szans rozwoju polskiej spółdzielczości rolniczej w poszerzonej Europie.

Cooperative legislation and organisation in the European Union and in the candidate countries reveals many similarities but also differences. Despite undoubted difficulties it faces, cooperative movement seeks new legal solutions to facilitate cooperatives access to financial markets, easing the limitations and requirements resulting from the cooperative rules. Cooperative movement in the candidate countries also attempts to adjust to new circumstances. New cooperative laws are passed or the former ones are amended. Despite considerable losses, which they have suffered in recent years Polish rural cooperatives still have a chance of development. The cooperatives, which survived the crisis have been slowly rebuilding their importance. Newly formed cooperatives are legally operating as producer groups. Farmers see the necessity of cooperation, particularly to gain sales market. (original abstract)
