Zamiarem autorów było pokazanie możliwości rozwoju regionu Mazur i Warmii, posiadającego olbrzymie walory przyrodnicze do rozwoju turystyki, która dzięki temu ma szanse stać się podstawową dziedziną działalności w tej części Polski. Autorzy zastanawiają się także, czy istniejący tam potencjał turystyczny jest wystarczający do konkurowania na unijnym rynku.

Warmia and Mazury region has a large tourist potential and, in the nearest future, can become one of the most attractive places for rest and visit. In order to do it, it is necessary to create proper conditions for the development of this kind of activity. In this article are presented opportunities and threats related with the development of tourist activity. Attractive natural conditions are chance for the region and inhabitants but they not guarantee a success. Main problem is a lack of suitable tourist and technical infrastructure. A barrier in the development of tourism, both in urban and rural areas, is shortage of own financial funds in budgets of state, local governments and entrepreneurs, which can be allocated in necessary investments. European integration and possibility of using from means of structural fund is chance on realization these tasks. It is possible to expect in next years, due to assistance of financial fund with outside sources, that qualitative lack in technical infrastructure of region will be deleted. A better care of natural and cultural resources, and make them the most, should accelerate the development of tourism in that part of Poland. The research have indicated for existence of many determinant of the development of tourism in this region, which is necessary to rationalized in order to be competitive on markets of European Union.
