This article presents the specific characteristics of the Eastern Enlargement of the European Union. The first part of the article presents the historical process of the enlargement of the European Communities by successive countries. It presents the economic and political context of each successive enlargement, arguments in favour of commencing accession negotiations advanced by the interested parties, the most crucial negotiation problems as well as issues specific to each enlargement. Specyfika wschodniego rozszerzenia Unii Europejskiej The second part of the article describes the process that led to the Eastern Enlargement of the EU. That section presents, inter alia, the most important arguments of both supporters and opponents of enlarging the EU to include Central and Eastern European countries, the economic and non-economic motives that guided these countries in striving towards EU membership, and a description of the EU membership costs these countries incurred. The third part is dedicated entirely to the specific character of the Eastern Enlargement against the background of the previous enlargements described in the first part. The article presents issues specific to this enlargement and resulting from: the Union's altered internal situation, new accession conditions (internal situation within the Union) as well as the character of the candidate countries. The final, fourth part of the article constitutes an attempt to evaluate the accession process and the method of conducting accession negotiations during the last enlargement of the European Union, concluded on 1 May 2004.
