Zamierzeniem autora było określenie zależności, jakie występowały pomiędzy polityką pieniężną prowadzoną przez NBP, a zmianami kredytów udzielanych przemysłowi spożywczemu w latach 1995-2002.

The purpose of the paper is to identify the relationship between monetary policy of the National Bank of Poland (NBP) and changes in credits taken by agrifood industry. The research covers the 1995-2002 period. In the short run, as interest rates decrease, ceteris paribus, the investment demand increases. In the long run, this way to stimulate economy leads to current costs of inflation and future costs of its combating. Therefore, the mainstream economists believe that one and only aim of the central bank is to achieve and maintain low inflation levels. The study results show that the monetary policy implemented by the National Bank of Poland was activating agrifood economy during the investigated period. Expansionary monetary policy was regularly accompanied by accelerated rate of increase in amount of credits drawn whereas contractionary policy went together with slowing this rate (absolute decrease was very rarely noted). This suggests that other factors were important, such as: expansionary fiscal policy, lack of competition between banks and consumer demand. It should be recognized that interest rates only in the short run help in the stimulation of real variables. (original abstract)
