Abstrakty

W artykule przedstawiono integrację europejską w aspekcie kulturowym, który może odgrywać ważną rolę w tworzeniu wiezi łączących obywateli państw Unii Europejskiej i konstrukcji europejskiej tożsamości. Opisano również zagadnienie nacjonalizmu jako ideologię, która zaciera granice pomiędzy wymiarem politycznym, społecznym i kulturowym życia społeczeństw.

The author attempts to point out the differences in understanding of nationalism, national identity, relationship between state and nation, among citizens of the old and the new Member States. The awareness of this diversity could occur important for the future of the European Union, especially for the European identity project. While Western Europe is often considered as a region of weakening nationalisms, national issues and national pasts revive in the Central-Eastern part of the continent. This can be, to a large extent, explained by different histories of two parts of Europe, especially as far as the development of independent nation states in 19th century and the impact of two World Wars on national histories are concerned. Moreover, it is clearly visible that the different historical traditions influenced understanding of nation and nationalism by Western and Central-Eastern European scholars. The former (such as Hans Kohn, Eric Hobsbawm, A.D. Smith and even Denis de Rougemont) tend to assume that state played a decisive role in constructing modern nation, while the latter (Florian Znaniecki, Miroslav Hroch) underline the importance of national community and its culture, often outliving state institutions.(original abstract)
