Econometric Analysis of Impact of Relative Location on the Growth Effects of Economic Integration. The Case of the EU

The objective of this paper was to assess whether relative location had an impact on the growth effects related to regional economic integration within the European Union. A positive answer to that question could be considered as a proof of a new generation of models linking endogenous growth and the so-called new economic geography. (original abstract)
W artykule omówiono dwa nowe wskaźniki relatywnego położenia (centralncgo-peryferyjnego) w celu przeprowadzenia testu, czy lokalizacja ma wpływ na średnio- i długoterminowe korzyści związane z integracją ekonomiczną w UE. Wykorzystano dwa powszechnie stosowane podejścia ekonometryczne - standardową regresję liniową oraz dynamiczne panelowe modele ekonometryczne. Badanie przeprowadzono na podstawie danych z lat 1960 i 1999, obejmujących 27 rozwiniętych gospodarek (15 krajów członkowskich UE oraz 12 nie będących członkami UE). Wyniki potwierdzają w pewnym stopniu wysuniętą tezę: zgodnie z modelami nowej geografii ekonomicznej (NEG) relatywna lokalizacja wewnątrz dużych organizacji integracyjnych, takich jak Unia Europejska, może wpływać na efekty wzrostowe związane z integracją ekonomiczną. Dodatkowo korzyści są asymetryczne w relacji centrum-peryferie. Wyniki te wymagają jednak dalszych badań empirycznych.(abstrakt oryginalny)
