Przedstawiono znaczenie gospodarcze bezpośrednich inwestycji zagranicznych. Omówiono uwarunkowania bezpośrednich inwestycji zagranicznych w krajach Europy Środkowej. Zamieszczono i omówiono dane dotyczące japońskich bezpośrednich inwestycji zagranicznych w Europie Środkowej na tle innych regionów.

In the year 1989 Central Europe countries initiated the transformation process, that allowed them transition into market economies, open and reaching significant economic dynamics. Therefore, they needed inflow of foreign means, as internal accumulation was insufficient. In turn, Japan, is a country that also transformed its economy in the past, which later successes amazed the world. In the 90s it became the greatest supplier of capital. The Author poses the question concerning the role played of the Japanese direct investments in the development of Central Europe countries. Do the countries of this region took advantage of the opportunity to attract Japanese capital surpluses? This and the following questions are answered by the analysis carried out in the paper: 1. Which macroeconomic factors facilitate, and which may have discouraging influence on location direct foreign investments in Central Europe countries? 2. How do the Japanese investments in Central Europe look like compared to the other regions of the world? 3. Did the process of accession of the Central Europe countries to the European Union have any impact on increasing of Japanese investments in this region? Has the par ticipation of this region changed as compared with others? 4. Participation of which countries in Central Europe in Japanese investments is the largest 5. In which areas is Japanese capital w Central Europe invested? The main thesis of the paper is the conclusion that despite numerous macroeconomic factors facilitating location of direct foreign investments in Central Europe, the countries of this region so far have not any crucial significance for the Japanese investors. Japanese advanced technological knowledge and capital have not flown into this part of the world on a larger scale. The paper concerns Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Romania, and Bulgaria. (original abstract)
