Przybliżono pojęcie społeczeństwa opartego na wiedzy. Przedstawiono formy realizacji społeczeństwa opartego na wiedzy w Polsce.

In this article, the author discusses the concept of the information society as an essential, albeit insufficient, stage in building a knowledge-based society. Creating a knowledge-based society is the most important postulate of the Lisbon Strategy passed by the European Council at the beginning of the current decade. The author discusses the main barriers that render fulfilment of this aim in Poland difficult. The heritage of the Polish People's Republic, which was backward technologically and poor in information, constitutes a very low starting point. The exceptionally rapid world development of telecommunications and information technology presents an opportunity for Poland. On the other hand, barriers include the lack of societal habits for creative learning and a system of academic research and education that is incapable of reforming itself. (original abstract)
