Przedstawiono definicje pojęcia „ innowacyjność” Przybliżono pomiary innowacyjności w statystyce unijnej. Pokazano miejsce Polski w UE pod względem innowacyjności. Na końcu zamieszczono analizę poziomu innowacyjności w rozszerzonej Unii Europejskiej.

The article presents an analysis and assessment of innovation level in the countries of the enlarged European Union with reference to 26 indicators of the European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS). The classification of European countries was performed based on positional statistics, especially the median. The criterion of EU countries division referred to values of 16 innovation indicators INPUT type i.e.: factors stimulating innovation, knowledge creation, innovativeness and entrepreneurship as well as 10 OUTPUT indicators i.e.: applications, intellectual property law. As the result four groups of European countries were obtained of various innovation levels related to EfS indicators, which were described by means of basic statistical characteristics. Countries of the highest and the lowest innovation level were pointed to, both in the group and the enlarged EU. The position of Poland was presented with regard to values of 26 attributes illustrating innovation which were compared to average EU ones among the old 15 EU members and among the enlarged group, as well as the position of Poland at the background of maximum values determined by the EU countries was evaluated.
