The author suggests we stop thinking of the European Union/European Communities in terms of a "collectivity" and instead start thinking of it as a "class": a community of interests. The assumption that the Community is in fact a unity calls for establishing the relationships between the three actors: the individual (European Union citizens - "We, the people"), EU member states en block, and the Community (the European Union/ European Communities). The author points to the fact that the relationships within "the triangle" differ in quality from the relationships "along straight lines" which exist in inter-state relations (citizen-to-state) and internationally (state-to-state). The challenge facing Europeanists today is developing a code of contemporary philosophy of ideas in Europe. In order to fulfill this ambitious task we have to define the basic ideas and demonstrate the way they function in life. "EU philosophy in practice" requires establishing horizontal lines (which express universal ideas) and vertical lines (which define community interactions in relation to national and international relations). It is the author's opinion that at the present stage of EU development, the findings of research conducted by experts in the economic analysis of law, are of the utmost importance.
