During the cold war British nuclear weapons served to enforce the concept of nuclear deterrence within national and allied - NATO - strategy. They served to hold back communism, as a safeguard against Soviet nuclear threat, and compensated for NATO's weakness in conventional weapons. They were to be a symbol of super-power status, special relations with the USA, and the UK's position in NATO. In the opinion of British strategists and politicians, nuclear weapons were the best protection of world peace and international security. The end of the cold war marked the beginning of a revaluation process in British military policy on nuclear weapons. The main nuclear policy dimensions were gradually shifted. In the event, the UK did not give up nuclear weapons nor the nuclear deterrent strategy. It did, nevertheless, decide to reduce the number of nuclear warheads; it abandoned many systems carrying nuclear payloads, and from 1999 it has been in the possession of the Trident II strategic submarine-launched ballistic missiles. These missiles will remain in operation at least until the 2020s. In order to safeguard state security, the UK has adopted the concept of the minimum reliable nuclear deterrence. A nuclear arms-free world should be our vision. This, however, is a distant perspective, mainly because of the nuclear potential of states such as the USA and Russia. Great Britain is in favor of implementing disarmament agreements, the control of armaments, a considerable reduction of nuclear potentials, and the gradual elimination of nuclear arms. Putting a stop to the dissemination of nuclear weapons and systems of nuclear weapons delivery is an important issue. In a realistic and pragmatic manner the UK has shown that a change in attitude towards nuclear arms is possible in the modern world. (original abstract)
