The difficulties met in the transition economies are reflected in the fall of those industries, which cannot adapt rapidly to the requirements of the market economy. For Romania, the sugar industry is the most eloquent example of the decline of a sub-branch of the food industry. A rebuilding of this industry could be realized using foreign direct investments and domestic experience. The analysis of the Romanian sugar channel, together with the investment policy and foreign capital flow's evolution, by sources and destinations, will strengthen the above-mentioned argument and reveal the present drawbacks and the need to accelerate the investment process. W artykule przedstawiono ważniejsze problemy produkcji buraków cukrowych i cukru w Rumunii. W latach 1989-2003 produkcja buraków cukrowych wyraźnie spadała, głównie ze względu na zmniejszenie obszaru ich uprawy. Podobnie spadała produkcja cukru i pogorszył się bilans obrotów zagranicznych. Szansą na rozwój cukrownictwa w Rumunii są inwestycje zagraniczne. (abstrakt oryginalny)
