The paper describes a new view on economic theory, develops a formal scheme for confronting theories with data, and uses the scheme to test an interesting economic hypothesis. In spite of its formality, the scheme is easy to apply and easy to generalize for Bayesian and classical econometricians alike. Moreover, the way of testing theories, which the scheme prescribes, is the right way as seen from the point of view of a mathematical logician. Besides presenting a useful scheme for confronting theories with data, the paper throws new light on the import of scientific theories. It also develops a new insights in the arduous task of establishing the empirical relevance of both syntactically constructed theories and theories that have been formulated with semantic arguments. In particular, the paper suggests that a rational application of its formal scheme for confronting theories with data may help scientists circumvent Duhem's dictum of the impossibility of conclusively falsifying scientific hypotheses. W artykule przedstawiono nowe spojrzenie na teorię ekonomii, rozwinięto formalny schemat służący do konfrontacji teorii z danymi i wykorzystano te ustalenia do testowania interesujących hipotez ekonomicznych. Pomimo swojej formalności, schemat jest łatwy do zastosowania oraz łatwy do zgeneralizowania zarówno przez bayesowskich, jak i klasycznych ekonometryków. Co więcej, sposób testowania hipotez zalecany w schemacie, jest sposobem właściwym z punktu widzenia logika matematycznego. Poza prezentacją użytecznego schematu dla porównywania teorii z danymi, praca rzuca nowe światło na znaczenie teorii naukowych. Artykuł przedstawia również nowe spojrzenie na trudne zadanie ustalania empirycznego znaczenia teorii zbudowanych syntaktycznie oraz teorii, które zostały sformułowane przy użyciu argumentów semantycznych. W szczególności, praca sugeruje, że racjonalne zastosowanie przedstawionych schematów formalnych dla konfrontacji teorii z danymi może pomóc naukowcom ominąć problem Duhema mówiący o niemożliwości rozstrzygającej falsyfikacji hipotez naukowych.
