Przedstawiono konsekwencje przewidywanego przystąpienia kolejnych krajów do europejskiego jednolitego obszaru walutowego. Bazę oceny stanowią przesłanki wynikające z teorii optymalnego obszaru walutowego. Uwzględniono wpływ przystąpienia do Unii Walutowej nie tylko nowych krajów członkowskich Unii Europejskiej, ale także Danii, Wielkiej Brytanii oraz Szwecji.

The process of enlarging the European Monetary Union (EMU) is directly related to the enlargement of the European Union (EU) itself. Members of the EU are obliged, having met the convergence criteria, to adopt the common currency - the euro. The recent EU enlargements in 2004 and 2007 extended the European Communities to include 27 countries and markedly increased the diversity of the EU economy. In this context a question should be asked, what consequences will be brought about by adoption of the common currency in such a large and diversified economic area. This paper analyzes the level of the economic convergence according to the theory of optimum currency areas in order to determine which factors could have a positive or negative impact on the activity of enlarged EMU. Factors subject to an empirical analysis include: wages flexibility, labour mobility, fiscal policy, correlation of business cycles, GDP, inflation and degree of trade integration within the members states that have not yet adopted the euro. The study includes many tables and charts to depict the macroeconomic performance of the EU members between 1995 and 2006. The analysis is based on Polish and foreign economic literature.
