Artykuł jest próbą oceny wpływu integracji na rozprzestrzenianie się wyników procesów naukowo-badawczych. Autor koncentruje się na analizie dyfuzji technologii w ugrupowaniu integracyjnym zachodzącej poprzez wymianę międzynarodową, przepływ zagranicznych inwestycji bezpośrednich oraz migrację kapitału ludzkiego. Artykuł składa się z dwóch części, z których pierwsza ma aspekt teoretyczny, a druga wymiar empiryczny.

The main objective of international integration is to intensify trade among countries, which usually leads to increased R&D cooperation and to wider knowledge or innovations transfers among the members of a union. Integration does not create new channels of technology diffusion but is able to change their relative importance for particular countries. First of all trade is becoming a more sound channel of technology diffusion than FDIs. International trade creates international spillovers in the importing country when the production of import-complementary (eg. components of an imported product) or import-substitute (imitation) goods is started. Integration causes a bigger effect of trade creation than trade diversion. International spillovers gained because of trade creation are, therefore, usually bigger than spillovers lost due to trade diversion. Integration also causes changes in FDIs - vertical FDIs are being replaced by horizontal FDIs. In terms of technology diffusion it is unfortunate as vertical FDIs are generally more technology-intensive. Integration may also be costly for an integrating country when spillovers coming from vertical FDIs before unification were important (because of high tariffs) and decrease in such spillovers is bigger than spillovers gained due to trade creation.
