Organizations now have to cope with the increasing internationalization of business, which necessitates collaboration and knowledge sharing simultaneously across time and space. Therefore there is a need to change the way we think, how knowledge is shared in organizations and distributed in groups. This paper presents Lave and Wenger's theory of Communities of Practice (CoPs) as a new approach to knowledge sharing, as well as the premises for its functioning in distributed environments using Hildreth, Wright and Kimble's case study, which explores the functioning of a CoP in a major US corporation across national boundaries.
