The Financing of Investment Activities in Small Business Enterprises - Study Results

Przedstawiono wyniki badań ankietowych, którymi objęto 87 przedsiębiorstw spełniających dwa kryteria: zatrudnienie nie przekraczające 50 osób oraz forma prawna przedsiębiorstwa osoby fizycznej, spółki cywilnej, spółki jawnej lub sp. z o.o. Zaprezentowano zmiany jakie w okresie 1998-2002 r. zaszły w strukturze finansowania inwestycji małych przedsiębiorstw oraz w podejściu ich właścicieli do korzystania z obcych źródeł finansowania.
Along with the changes in the economic situation in the recent decade, a remarkable tendency on the part of the entrepreneurs to engage in an investment activity has been observed. This correlation is most spectacular as concerns the activities of small business entrepreneurs. Scarcity of the capital indispensable for the financing of investments, which aggravates in the case of a slump in the market, presents a major problem to the economic subjects of different sizes. However, in contrast to the large economic subjects, the small ones have much more limited possibilities to support an investment activity with the outside capital. In 1998, the authors of this paper conducted a wide-range study concerning investment activities of small business enterprises in the Province of Katowice. The study results indicated that the companies' own resources played a major role in the financing of investments of small business enterprises. About 2/3 of the investments were financed from the companies' own resources, used either as the sole resource or as the predominating one. The entrepreneurs were highly skeptical as to the possibility of using credits. Only one out of five regarded credit as a convenient form of financing an investment activity. The remaining entrepreneurs either did not use credits or used them out of necessity. The adopted form of financing an investment activity was also highly influenced by the entrepreneur's age and education. On the other hand, the legal status of the enterprise did not seem to play an important role. In the years 2001-2002, the authors repeated the study, by investigating the enterprises of the newly established Province of Silesia. This paper shows the changes that took place in the period 1998-2002 as regards the structure of financing the investments of small business enterprises and the entrepreneurs' approach to the outside investment resources.
