Abstrakty
The author presents the results of an empirical analysis of the reasons why small and medium-sized Polish enterprises undertake and maintain exports. The article begins with a presentation of the results of studies carried out on this subject around the world. The author classifies the motives for exporting into internal and external and proactive and reactive motives. He discusses sixteen reasons for which export is carried out together with a preliminary analysis of those reasons in relation to Poland. The theoretical part finishes with a discussion of the significance of reasons for internationalisation in studies carried out around the world. In the empirical part, the author presents the results of studies carried out in small and medium-sized enterprises in the Małopolskie region. The research had a quantitative character and involved a postal questionnaire sent to over 100 enterprises. Factor analysis was carried out, as a result of which three types of motives for internationalisation were identified: “challenge” - which is of an internal proactive character; and two motives of a reactive character: “potential” (unused production potential due to the limitations of the domestic market) and “signals” (making use of signals about the possibility of entry into foreign markets). The author indicates the features of an enterprise that impact on the intensity of each of the three production potential due to the limitations of the domestic market) and “signals” (making use of signals about the possibility of entry into foreign markets). The author indicates the features of an enterprise that impact on the intensity of each of the three motives. These features include: the level of internationalisation of the enterprise, the nature of the business conducted by the enterprise, and enterprise’s structural adjustment to the requirements of foreign markets.(original abstract)
